LARGE LEATHER BELT HOLSTER FOR A .44 CALIBER PERCUSSION REVOLVER
This type of leather accoutrement, a Civil War flap holster, was worn by countless officers, cavalrymen, and soldiers during the Civil War and after the War. This rugged specimen is machine made and measures approximately 14 1/2 inches long with its flap closed. Holster easily accommodates a large martial .44 or .36 caliber sidearm such as the Colt or Remington revolver. The body of this leather specimen is cut from a large single piece of thick, black bridle leather and folded over, machine-stitched and riveted to form the main body. Exterior leather body is strong with tight original stitching with some surface cracking or flaking. Leather flap is strong, but does exhibit moderate cracking. Closure tab is torn but all present and remaining riveted to the flap. Holster body strongly retains its small pear-shaped brass finial. A 3" wide, thick leather piece is folded over and riveted and stitched to the holster backside to serve as a single belt loop. All seam stitching is original and tight. A remarkably strong and tight leather revolver holster in very good original condition.
